When Uplands College White River teachers and learners took a 13 day hiking trip into the deep woods of Mpumalanga, one enthusiastic student that formed part of that expedition was Transnet’s young Ambassador, Andrea Nyambo. An ambitious 16 year old Uplands College pupil, Nyambo is one the students receiving academic sponsorship from the Transnet Foundation through the Orphaned Youth Education Programme.

The year 2013 was a year of pronounced note for one of the Transnet Foundation’s Orphaned Youth Education Development Programme (OYEPD) learners Johan Engelbrecht, an orphan from Belfast Orphanage in Hammanskraal. As he continues to display a consistent upward trajectory in academic performance, his passion for rugby took him to even greater heights as he played for the country’s top rugby teams in 2013.

Thousands of grade seven learners turned up during the 2013 selection process for the Transnet Foundation’s Orphaned Youth Education Development Programme with hopes of making it into the life changing education support. With only 20 bursary places available and an even stiffer adjusted selection criterion, it is only appropriate to say that only the best out of the best qualified for the scholarships.

In 2012, Transnet (SOC) Ltd implemented the Transnet Foundation Orphaned Youth Education Development Programme (OYEPD), a programme targeted at academically gifted students. The programme’s objective is to promote a culture of academic excellence in South Africa by providing comprehensive educational and psycho-social support to orphaned youths in strategically targeted areas.

Transnet SOC Ltd has extended its goodwill arm to Tenteleni Pre-School in Mpumalanga by giving a once off donation of R 200 000.00, for one container to be refurbished and converted into a classroom for the school’s use. The Container Assistance programme (CAP) of Transnet provides critical infrastructure for deserving safety and social programmes and initiatives. The CAP focuses on both rail related and social programmes to deliver holistic social interventions, such as Transnet community centres and classrooms.

As Matric results for the class of 2013 continue to stir positive reviews across the country and most importantly the class being hailed as the best matric performance since the advent of democracy, the SAFA Transnet Football School of Excellence has also registered its own victory and ultimate contribution towards the overall national pass rate of 78.2 %.

The Transnet School of Excellence has continued with its tradition of sweeping the awards in 2013. The Boys’ school located in Ekurhuleni and funded by Transnet and SAFA has lived true to its name in this front producing stars that have gone on to represent South Africa on the international stages.

Barely a year after he was placed under the Transnet Foundation Orphaned Youth Education Development’s care, 16 year old Tswelopele Molema is climbing new heights and doing the Foundation proud.

It is always good to see a sponsored cause yielding positive results and putting the resources to good use. Over the past 2 years, Transnet has been sponsoring the Wiehahn Eksteen Karate team to the world Karate competitions and the team’s performance improves every year.
