Shamona Kandia

Acting Senior Manager: Health (Phelophepa)

Shamona Kandia is currently the acting Senior Manager: Health at the recommendation of the former Health Manager. She leads the Health portfolio to render strategic and operational support to execute the corporate social responsibility mandate of Transnet Foundation, to the benefit of both the company and targeted communities. Shamona is also tasked with managing the provision of quality primary health care services to primarily rural communities through the Phelophepa I and II Health Care Trains.

Since joining Transnet in March 2012 as Operations Manager, Kandia has championed the coordination and management of the social mobilisation/marketing process amongst rural communities. In June 2012, she conceptualised and implemented a new programme aimed at teenage girls responding to the national call to provide sanitary products to young women in four provinces.

In her capacity she is in charge of handling the provision of female health and hygiene education / awareness services and hygiene products to teenage girls in targeted, impoverished communities to support the goal of good health and hygiene practices and contribute to sustained healthy living.

Following her degree in Social Work from the University of Durban-Westville, Shamona received a Master’s Degree (Clinical Social Work) from University of Johannesburg in 2005. Her commitment to service excellence in the public sector dates back as far as 1994 with various institutions such as the Johannesburg Institute of Social Services, Gauteng Department of Social Services, Gauteng Provincial Department of Community Safety, and the Gauteng Provincial Department of Social Development where she served as Deputy Director before joining Transnet.
