After a grueling two months of mental and physical training, Phelophepa Protection Officers finally earned their wings to serve and protect on the world’s renowned health Train. The officers, who were excited about the graduation ceremony that lasted about two hours, were upbeat and looking forward to their initial assignments starting in January 2015.

The informal ceremony held at the Transnet Esselen School of Excellence on the 12th of December 2014 was held in recognition of the training, discipline and the commitment displayed by the protection officers during their two months intensive training. It was attended by Transnet representatives; from Human Resources, Group Security, the Foundation’s Health and Communications portfolios.

Sibusiso Ngomane, Senior Manager: Communications and Special Projects handed over graduation gifts to the excited and visibly proud graduates while Shamona Kandia, Senior Manager: Health presided. “I would like to congratulate each and every one of you. We are very excited to have you as protection officers of the Phelophepa Health Train. It is our hope that you will further enjoy your career at the Foundation and above all serve and protect our health train,” said Mr Ngomane.

A very proud and glowing Miss Kandia said it has indeed been a challenging two months within which the protection officers were trained in all manners and disciplines of protection and safety. “The training is certainly not easy,” she said. “Thank you very much for the hard work and effort you have all put in. We have called on you severally over the year and you have always responded positively and eagerly. I am confident that together we will achieve and I have no doubt that your training has enhanced your performance.”

Transnet (SOC) Ltd Group Security Manager, Neil Naidu said: “You are highly trained officers and we must trust that you will perform to the best of your abilities. The company is entrusting you with its high value assets for you to protect. In a bid to continually monitor quality and compliance, you should expect periodic visits from the college to see how you have settled in and also how you perform in your assigned duties. All the best to all of you who have made it through the course,” he concluded.

Nkosi Tafane, one of the excited graduates at the function concurred with Transnet managers that the training was not easy; however, he was excited by the fact that he had successfully completed it and was now being recognised for it. “It can never be easy. To protect the company’s valuables, one must be adequately trained to understand the importance of those valuables to the company and the people it serves. I am only glad that I am part of this initiative and have successfully completed the grueling training. I am looking forward to 2015,” Tafane concluded.
