Barkerville Junior Secondary School gets lucky

A secondary school located in a rural community of Ngxabaxha, Mount Frere in the Eastern Cape has struck it lucky as it received a computer lab housing 55 computers and two printers, courtesy of Transnet (SOC) Limited in the month of April 2013.

The donation made via the state owned entity’s social investment arm, Transnet Foundation to the tune of four hundred thousand rand, included the conversion of two classrooms into two computer laboratories.
The school, located 100 km from uMthatha caters for 300 learners from grade R to grade 9 and these learners go on to do well in grade 12.
The upgrade of the classes, at a cost of over R400 000, included adding some burglar proofs on windows and doors, the fixing of electricity to meet the requirements for 55 computers users, mounting of work stations for 55 computers, painting of the walls and ceiling, improving ventilation by putting air-conditioning and enhancing security with 2 CCTV cameras.
This donation is linked to our key business imperatives and strategies. “It goes beyond reaching out to schools in poor communities and speaks directly to our Market Demand Strategy (MDS). It is deliberate in its response to the initiative seven (7) of the MDS which aims to increase our contribution to skills development in South Africa,” explains Ms Theresa Moila, Senior Manager: Education.
“Education is a firm priority for the Foundation. Good education forms the foundation of a great nation. This is the driving force behind our commitment to developing our communities’ teachers and learners,” concludes Transnet Foundation Head, Ms Cynthia Mgijima.
