The Transnet Foundation, the CSI division of Transnet SOC Limited donated a 10- seater Toyota Quantum to the Alexandra Health Centre and University Clinic based in Alexandra Township, a 10-seater Toyota Quantum.

development within the broader communities of South Africa responded to a clarion call by the Alexandra Health Centre & University Clinic for assistance in tackling the various challenges it faced.

The Foundation responded to the clinic’s transport challenges by making a donation of a 10-seater Toyota Quantum.

After a careful analysis of the challenges, and in unison with the CEO’s office, Transnet responded to one critical challenge, that of providing transport to the clinic to ferry staff and equipment during the process of conducting home visits within the
Alexandra community.

The Alexandra Health Centre and University clinic is currently facing great challenges that include a rapidly increasing population due to people immigrating from the rural areas as well as the neighbouring countries. The township has a population of about a million people, and the health centre continues to be regarded as an oasis of hope.

The clinic has served the community with passion and dedication for the past 82 years and with Transnet SOC Limited’s contribution, it is almost certain that more lives will be saved through this show of selflessness. Attending the hand-over function and keynote speaker was Transnet SOC Limited’s Chairman, Mr Mafika Mkhwanazi and Dr Labane Maluleke among other dignitaries.

Mkhwanazi said: “Nelson Mandela once said ‘there is nothing I fear more than waking up without a program that will help me bring a little happiness to those with no resources, those who are poor, illiterate, and ridden with terminal disease’, that
fear was contagious and has finally caught up with me.

“Our human compassion binds us - one to the other - not in pity or patronizingly, but as human beings who have learnt how to turn our common suffering into hope for the future. It is indeed still in this spirit of Madiba, the spirit of ubuntu and humility that I come before you to present Transnet’s programme that we hope should bring the Alexandra community a little happiness. We must keep it in mind at all times that there can be no keener revelation of a society's soul than the way in which it treats its own children.

“We must use the time in our hands wisely and forever realize that the time is always ripe to do right. For to deny people their human rights, is to challenge their very humanity. We make a living by what we get, but we make a life by what we give,” he
concluded.

The Chief Executive at the Alexandra Clinic Dr Labane Maluleke said the ongoing investments such as the one undertaken by the Transnet Foundation, is an indelible sign of commitment to the people of the area, moreso because of the needs that
arise within the area.

“This for us is a further commitment by Transnet to say we are not alone in our efforts to ensure quality healthcare for our people, this transportation mode will be cherished.”

In conclusion, the chairperson of the Board at Transnet Foundation Mr. Mpho Moerane said: “Following lengthy discussions with the Alexandra Clinic on the request they proposed to Transnet Foundation, a decision was made to address the
challenge that the Alexandra was facing, this being in line with our mandate, we were only happy to comply, we understand that we are part of a bigger development plan and we’ll continue to identify communities that require our assistance however big or small.”
